Weekend Trip to Duluth

Now that Rob is working 3 Saturdays a month (don't feel too bad, it is only 4 hours per Saturday!), the weekends that Rob are off are very valuable. This past weekend Rob had Saturday off so we decided to check out some of our surroundings here in Minnesota. There are a select few places I want to see before our time is up here and Duluth is on the list so it was time to check that one off! Saturday morning we drove up to Duluth which is just over 2 hours north and located on the coast of Lake Superior. Our friends Rachel and Harvey Dahl and their 3 children - Lauren, Grant, and Ella joined us for our weekend adventure. Pulling into town it is a bit industrial at first but then the closer you get to Lake Superior the more you feel like you are at the ocean because the lake is so big you can't see the other end.
Our first stop was food. We ate on the deck of Grandma's Grill and Saloon. The food wasn't great, but the view was worth the money. The deck overlooks the aerial lift bridge which lifts straight up to allow large boats to sail under it. The bridge lifted up about every 5-10 minutes because this is a busy shipping time of year. The kids loved watching the bridge and the adults enjoyed it just as much!
This vintage motorcycle was inside the restaurant and Evan wanted to ride it home!
Next stop was walking around Canal Park and along the shore of Lake Superior which is called the Lakewalk.
We even dipped our feet in the lake which supposedly never gets above 50 degrees even in the heat of the summer. It was a very hot day, low 90's, so the freezing cold lake felt nice on our feet even though they did turn numb after a few minutes! The kids enjoyed throwing rocks into the lake while the adults just wanted to cool off!

We then piled into the cars and took a scenic drive up the coast to Gooseberry Falls. What a beautiful drive! Most of the drive you are right along the water's edge and there is a lot of greenery. It was a very easy walk to the waterfalls and the area was beautiful. Once again the kids had fun throwing rocks into the water. I see a trend beginning! It was time to eat again so we went to a quaint town called Two Harbors and passed up all the ma-and-pa cafes and went to Pizza Hut! I know, we are no fun but we wanted something the kids would eat and after not having a fabulous lunch we were ready for some "safe" food. After dinner we drove back to Duluth and called it a night by checking into our hotel.
The next morning we had a great breakfast of omelettes, pancakes, french toast, and our favorite, chocolate milk! Best meal so far!! We went back to Canal Park and rented a double bike that the kids could sit up front in a basket. We rode the bikes along the Lakewalk, under the aerial life bridge, and to the light house. It sounds like a lot, but it is all really close. The bike was so much fun.
Evan also enjoyed feeding the seagulls.

To finish off the vacation with a bang we then took a ride on the North Shore Scenic Railroad aka Murdoch as Evan called it. It was a 1 1/2 hour train ride through downtown Duluth and up the north shore of Lake Superior.
Very scenic and relaxing. So relaxing that by the end all of the kids were asleep and Harvey was also!! Even though all the kids fell asleep, this is the thing they still are talking about. The train car we rode in was orange, thus Evan called it Murdoch, for all of you Thomas fans out there. It was a double-decker train car and we rode up top for the first 30 minutes then headed to the first floor. Evan has in heaven riding on Murdoch! He was in awe for the first little bit. Though since the train ride was during Evan's nap time, he just couldn't hold on until the end. Evan fell asleep, kneeling against the seat, during the last 5 minutes of the ride!

We had a great weekend getaway and really fell in love with the city of Duluth, Lake Superior, and the quaintness of the North Shore (not Boston's north shore all you Bostonians. Though I love that North Shore also! The North Shore of Lake Superior. I was very confused when I first moved here).

Tomorrow I am having my ultrasound so check back and hopefully we will know if the babe is a boy or a girl!!!
